A new type of delivery driver will soon be able to work alongside Ken Smith at his UPS facility in Tempe, Arizona. – Drivers who do pretty much the same job, only for lower wages and on weekends.
Smith’s union, the Teamsters, is negotiating a new five-year contract with UPSers for 260,000 workers. The interim agreement would create a new class of “hybrid” driver that would do two things: sort packages at UPS facilities and deliver them to the truck. His workweek would include Saturdays and probably Sundays.
The new rating would bring some relief to intimidated drivers like Smith, who is on the run from work over the weekend and want to help UPSers be more nimble at the competitive time on Amazon. But that brings with it a big problem.
The new hires would work at a lower salary than current full-time drivers and would start and end with lower hourly rates. Nor would they have the same limits on forced overtime and would open long work weeks. Smith believes these factors would essentially result in new, second-class drivers in the union and potentially lower levels for everyone in the long run.
How much is the work worth if a man next to me earns $ 6 less per hour? It devalues a driver’s job, “said Smith, a 22-year-old UPS veteran.” We should all discount what unions have done in the past.
